There are five important ingredients in the construction of a good shoe:

The Last. The Last is the mould with which a shoe is shaped. Good last design is vital as it creates the final shape of the shoe. Many kids' shoes are made using smaller versions of adult lasts, which is totally inappropriate because a child's foot is completely different from an adults' foot. At Shoes & Sox we choose shoes that are made on lasts that are specifically designed for kids' feet to ensure a perfect fit.

The Upper. Leather is the best material for the upper of childrens' shoes. Leather is flexible and soft but still hard wearing. It also lets air in but keeps moisture out meaning that feet stay cool and dry in most conditions. Today there are many synthetic materials that look like leather but don't have the same qualities. The Sole. Rubber and polyurethane (PU) are the best materials for the soles of kids shoes. They are both flexible and hard wearing. PU is better than rubber because it has cushioning properties which give the sole shock absorption qualities. At Shoes & Sox we pay special attention to the cushioning of the sole.
The Heel Counter. The heel counter is a reinforced cardboard device that is inserted at the back of the shoe to "clamp" the foot into an upright position. The heel counter facilitates, upright walking motion, vertical posture and side to side balance.
